2025 Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium

The 17th edition of the Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium (MIGS) took place on January 25-26, at the Royal College of Physicians in London. This year’s event brought together nearly 300 ophthalmologists from 16 countries, fostering discussions on the latest advancements in glaucoma care.

Since its inception in 2008, MIGS has been an annual conference dedicated to Glaucoma Research and Innovation, Clinical Trends and Challenges, and Service Delivery. Each year, the program explores cutting-edge developments in glaucoma management. This edition featured breakthroughs in ocular surface diagnostics, AI innovative surgical techniques, and applications in glaucoma, emphasizing a patient-centered approach to care. Key discussions also examined the integration of lifestyle advice into standard treatment.

Laboratoires Théa has been the exclusive sponsor of MIGS since 2015, reinforcing its commitment to advancing glaucoma research and education.

Scientific highlights:

We had the privilege of hearing from distinguished speakers worldwide.

· The ocular surface – diagnosis and corneal surgeries – was one of the key focus of the first day, with Dr. Roberts presenting groundbreaking research on the impact of PGAs on corneal biomechanics. Dr. Muthusamy explored how MIGS and tube surgeries affect subsequent corneal procedures, such as corneal grafts.

· The symposium featured comparisons between tube shunts, then presented newly marketed MIGS devices, and those still in development, emphasizing their relevance in future glaucoma management.

· A patient-centric approach was highlighted with discussions on new therapeutic agents beyond IOP-lowering treatments, including oral nicotinamide as a neuroprotectant for retinal nerve health.

· The second day focused on AI-driven advancements, including emerging home monitoring tools—though these are currently more tailored to retinal diseases than glaucoma.

· The congress ended on an inspiring note, presenting a study on macaques that received intravitreal stem cell injections to restore retinal ganglion cells, offering hope for future neuroregenerative therapies in glaucoma.
