Prep’EBO:
your EBO exam preparation hub
Providing high quality ophthalmic education and facilitating knowledge sharing has always been of utmost importance to Théa’s founders, the Chibret Family. So Théa supports the EBO organization and assist interns in preparing for their exam.

What is Prep’EBO?
Prep’EBO is a training MCQ program created by Théa Academy to help candidates prepare for the EBO exam. The EBO exam is a recognized certification of excellence in ophthalmology across Europe.
While not mandatory in all countries, it offers several key benefits:
• Standardized European Qualification: It provides a unified benchmark of knowledge and clinical competence across EU countries, helping to ensure consistent standards in ophthalmic care.
• Career Advancement: Passing the EBO exam can enhance a candidate’s CV, making them more competitive for jobs, fellowships, or academic positions across Europe and beyond.
• Mobility Within Europe: It facilitates easier professional recognition and cross-border career opportunities, especially in countries that value or require the diploma.
• Professional Credibility: Holding the EBO diploma demonstrates a commitment to high standards and lifelong learning, boosting trust among peers, employers, and patients.
• Preparation for National Exams: In many cases, EBO preparation also strengthens a candidate’s foundation for national board exams, since it covers both core and advanced ophthalmology topics.
Why prepare for the EBO exam with Prep’EBO?

As the exclusive sponsor of the event, Théa Academy is committed to providing high-quality educational resources to help candidates build the knowledge needed to succeed. Prep’EBO is an MCQ program offering access to EBO-specific questions covering the exam’s key topics. It is designed to support young ophthalmologists by providing relevant content for effective exam preparation.
Preparing well for the EBO exam is essential, as the diploma can significantly enhance career prospects in ophthalmology.
The EBO Exam alternates between two cities, Paris and Berlin, with one virtual exam and one face-to-face exam each year. This year’s face-to-face EBO Exam will take place on September 26, 2025, at the ESTREL Congress Center in Berlin. Applications opened on March 26th, 2025, and will close once capacity has been reached or on June 4th, 2025.
The EBO exam is typically taken in the final year of ophthalmology residency or by recently qualified ophthalmologists who meet national training standards. It consists of two main components.
Candidates begin with a Written Examination, a multiple-choice test with around 50 questions. These cover a wide range of ophthalmology sub-specialties, such as:
• Retina and vitreous
• Cornea and ocular surface
• Glaucoma
• Neuro-ophthalmology
• Pediatric ophthalmology
• Uveitis and inflammatory diseases
• Ocular oncology, and more
This part of the exam is designed to assess core clinical knowledge and diagnostic reasoning.
The exam concludes with an Oral Examination, in which each candidate is examined by two independent panels of senior ophthalmologists in two consecutive 15-minute sessions. They are asked to:
• Analyze clinical images
• Discuss real-life cases
• Explain management strategies and justify their decisions
This section evaluates not only medical expertise but also the ability to think critically and communicate effectively under pressure.
